The crisis has hit the Canary Islands really hard with an unemployment of 26,12%, and 33% of the population is now below the poverty line. There has always been a strange difference between salary and the cost of living in the Canary Islands. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the most expensive town in Spain, it is much more expensive to park your car in Las Palmas than in the centre of Madrid, a cup of coffee costs more in the south of Gran Canaria than in the centre of Berlin, the cost of basic food is also much more expensive than the rest of Spain, and the salaries are the lowest in Spain.
